Books can transport us to just about anywhere we want to go – both real-world places as well as fictional destinations. Have you read a book recently that inspired you to travel somewhere? Here are some locations that some popular books have used in their stories.
The area around Monterey, California is known as “Steinbeck Country” because so many of the books written by Nobel Prize-winning author John Steinbeck were set in the area. East of Eden was set in the Salinas Valley while Cannery Row, the Depression-era novel, tells the story of people who lived in Monterey and worked at the sardine canneries, known as Cannery Row. Plan a camping trip to Thousand Trails Morgan Hill, Marina Dunes RV Resort or Thousand Trails San Benito to explore Steinbeck Country. Don’t miss the Steinbeck House where Steinbeck was born and raised.

Are you a fan of Carl Hiassen’s novels which are a mix of crime thrillers with a strong environmentalism theme running through them? If you are, you’ll know they are set in various locations in Florida. For example, Bad Monkey, which was recently made into a streaming series, is set in Key West while Hoot, which centers on a group of children trying to save a colony of burrowing owls from losing their home to a housing development, is set in Coconut Grove. Camp at Fiesta Key RV Resort or Sunshine Key RV Resort to visit Key West and camp at Encore Miami Everglades to visit Coconut Grove.

Nicholas Sparks, whose books should be sold with a side of Kleenex, has written some of the best tear-jerker love stories of this century. The Notebook, Dear John, and A Walk to Remember are just a few of the romance novels he has produced. Head to Beaufort, North Carolina to explore the setting of A Walk to Remember, camping at nearby Emerald Isle RV Resort. You may not have read the book, but everyone has seen the movie based on The Notebook and while set in fictional Seabrook, South Carolina, several movie scenes were actually filmed in New Bern, North Carolina. Camp at Whispering Pines Campground to visit New Bern.

James Michener was known for his epic sagas about generations in a specific geographic location like Texas and the Chesapeake Bay area. The aptly named novel Texas covers plenty of ground throughout the state, but focuses mainly on southern Texas and the Spanish missions. Plan a camping stay at Thousand Trails Medina Lake to explore San Antonio and the history of the missions. Thousand Trails Chesapeake Bay might be a good place to make camp while you read the roughly 800+ page novel, Chesapeake, which spans the history of this area of Virginia from 1583 to 1974!
