The fifth month of the year, unofficial kick-off to summer, and safe to say wonderful weather all over the country. So, what are your plans for May? We have five ideas, based on five special commemorative designations in May:
May 3 is National Astronomy Day! We know it’s come and gone but we think you should still find some time this month to head to an observatory, planetarium or designated Dark Sky Park to celebrate the day. Top hits would include California’s Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles (camp at Thousand Trails Soledad Canyon); the INTUITIVE Planetarium located within the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama (camp at Thousand Trails Hidden Cove); or the Burke Baker Planetarium, located within Houston’s Museum of Natural Science (camp at Thousand Trails Lake Conroe). From a dark sky perspective, check out Anzo-Borrego Desert State Park in California (camp at Thousand Trails Pio Pico) or Big Cypress National Preserve in Florida (camp at Encore Miami Everglades)

Tourist Appreciation Day is May 6! Even after this celebration you can head to some of the most popular tourist destinations in the US knowing that real crowds don’t hit until summer. The most popular destinations include Orlando, Florida (the theme parks, the weather and the outdoor activities) and camp at Encore Tropical Palms or Thousand Trails Orlando; Las Vegas (The Strip, the Sphere, the Neon Museum to name a few, plus hiking in Red Rock Canyon) and camp at Thousand Trails Las Vegas; or the City by the Bay, aka San Francisco, with its iconic Golden Gate Bridge, Fisherman’s Wharf, quirky Lombard Street and Alcatraz Island with a camp stay at San Francisco RV Resort.

World Whiskey Day is celebrated annually on the third Saturday in May, so we’ve found a few distilleries that offer tours nearby our campgrounds. If you’re camping at O’Connell’s RV Campground in Amboy, Illinois, Whiskey Acres Distilling Co. (whiskeyacres.com) offers tours and tastings Fridays through Sundays; St. Augustine Distillery Co. offers both guided and self-guided tours in the the historic Florida city so if you’re staying at Encore Bulow this is an option

Of course May is the month that includes Memorial Day, originally known as Decoration Day, to honor the sacrifice of our servicemen and servicewomen so pay tribute to these heroes by visiting some of the best military museums in the country which could include The National Museum of the U.S. Air Force in Dayton, Ohio, the oldest military aviation museum in the world (stay at nearby Thousand Trails Wilmington); Gettysburg National Military Park Museum and Visitor Center in Pennsylvania (camp at Thousand Trails Gettysburg Farm or Drummer Boy Camping Resort); or the National Museum of the Pacific War, located in Fredericksburg, Texas, which was the boyhood home of Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz from WWII fame (camp at Thousand Trails Medina Lake).

May 8 is National Have a Coke Day and the most authentic way to do this at any time this month is with a visit to the World of Coca-Cola in Atlanta, Georgia. Book a stay at nearby Pine Mountain and explore all there is to know about this soft drink that was introduced on May 8, 1886 in downtown Atlanta by Dr. John Pemberton. At the World of Coca-Cola visitors can visit the Beverage Lab; enjoy a film about Coke in the Coca-Cola Theater; experience the interactive Scent Discovery Room and of course, shop for all the merch you can imagine at the Coca-Cola Store.
