Spring is considered the best time for kite-flying because winds tend to be most prevalent this time of year, so it makes sense that April is National Kite Month. Whether you’re a kite enthusiast or just getting started, here are some great spots to “go fly a kite” while camping nearby.
Long Beach, Washington: The beach here is aptly named as it stretches 28 miles – providing plenty of space to fly a kite. Book a stay at Thousand Trails Long Beach and you’re about 1,000 feet away from the beach and the waters of the beautiful Pacific Ocean. Another fun thing about Long Beach – it’s home to the World Kite Museum which includes a Hall of Fame and plenty of kite-related exhibits. Book another stay in August to attend the International Kite Festival scheduled for August 21-27.
Wildwood, New Jersey: While one of the world’s premier kite festivals won’t be held here until May (May 26-29), April is a great month to fly a kite on this beach. Ranked by USA Today as one of the top ten places to fly a kite thanks to Wildwood Beach’s “expansive expanses” – meaning it’s plenty wide and long to run your kite along. When you’re done with kite flying, check out the historic Wildwood Boardwalk which offers amusement rides and classic boardwalk fare like funnel cakes and fudge. Camping at Thousand Trails Lake & Shore or Thousand Trails Sea Pines are the best bet for a visit to Wildwood.
Cleveland, Ohio: You can thank the winds off Lake Erie for making Cleveland’s Edgewater State Park the place to fly a kite if you’re camping with us at Thousand Trails Kenisee Lake (which is less than 60 miles away). With 9,000 feet of shoreline, the location also provides great views of the Cleveland skyline and is dog-friendly. Of course, Cleveland is also home to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, so don’t miss the opportunity to check out this one-of-a-kind homage to some of music’s best and brightest.
San Francisco, California: How about a kite-flying expedition with a view of the Golden Gate Bridge added in? Plan a camping trip to San Francisco RV and take the drive to Cesar Chavez Park which is located in the Berkeley Marina in the San Francisco Bay. With 90 acres of open meadowlands, this is a perfect place to run wild with your kite. On weekends, Highline Kites, a “mobile emporium,” is open for all your kite-buying needs.
