On this day, we commemorate the well doings of the great National Hotdog and Sausage Council as we celebrate America’s favorite frank. National Hotdog Day falls on the July 20, and hopefully this will be the last year you neglect this groundbreaking holiday. Us hotdog lovers are accepting to those who will choose this year to begin observing; the more the merrier!
Established in 1991 by the North American Meat Institute, National Hotdog Day occurs on the closest Wednesday to the Annual Hotdog Lunch at Capitol Hill. That’s right, even the most powerful politicians in the United States spend an afternoon celebrating this delicacy. Just imagine baseball games, summer cookouts, or the Fourth of July deprived of the dogs. That’s not a world we want to live in, so let’s celebrate! Here are reasons why we will this year:
To appreciate the variety –
Although it’s officially not in the sandwich category, sausages can be topped with whatever the consumer feels. It fits all acquired tastes! Anything from Chicago Style or Chili Dogs, to just a dog on a bun, there are not many toppings that haven’t been tried on a hot dog. Let’s not forget the legendary corn dog that swept the floor in 1941 by simply putting the dog on a stick: genius!
It represents American culture –
There’s nothing more American than classic innovation. The German Bratwurst turned Americanized was the birth of this revolutionary food that has developed so immensely since it’s making. From being sold on the streets for a penny, to becoming one of the most popular summer traditions, the love that citizens hold for the franks is endless. According to the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council (that’s a real thing!), in the days between Memorial Day and Labor Day, about 7 billion hot dogs will be consumed. Hot dogs mean camping –
Placed on a grill, or over a campfire on a stick, eating hot dogs while camping is an unspoken rule to most avid campers. The simplicity of the preparation, and the amount of diversity in toppings is probably how this cuisine became embedded in camping culture. Even kids can make it to their liking over the campfire. No matter where you go, or how old you are, there’s nothing better than being outdoors surrounded by loved ones, while enjoying a camping delicacy: the hot dog.
