10 Fun and Festive Ways to Spend October

October is here which means there are only two months to finish up your 2024 Bucket List. Celebrate the 10th month of the year with these 10 great ideas which you may or may not yet have on your list!!

1. October 1st is Green City Day which recognizes “the progress and innovations cities are making to become more sustainable.” Why not camp near some of the top cities recognized nationally for their efforts and see why they are so “green”: Seattle (book a stay at Tall Chief Campground); Portland (book a stay at Portland Fairview RV Park); Sacramento (camp at California’s Thousand Trails Lake Minden); or Washington DC (about 60 miles from Thousand Trails Harbor View.)

2. 3. Indigenous Peoples’ Day: October 14 is Indigenous Peoples’ Day so plan to visit Fort Ancient in Oregonia, Ohio (less than 30 minutes from Thousand Trails Wilmington) to see North America’s largest ancient hilltop enclosure built by Native Americans nearly 2000 years ago.

4. National Fossil Day: October 18 is National Fossil Day so check out Caesar Creek State Park in Waynesville, Ohio, which is about 20 minutes from Thousand Trails Wilmington and a great place for viewing fossils and even collecting (permit required)

5. National Kentucky Day: Celebrate the Bluegrass State this month which is celebrated every year on October 19 with its own National Day. Make a reservation at Thousand Trails Diamond Caverns, our beautiful Blue Grass contribution to our camping family, which is set on 743 acres that includes an 18-hole golf course! Explore the ruins of Bell’s Tavern, a Civil-War era building that served as a strategic landmark for soldiers passing through the area. Or visit the Cave Valley Winery. Of course, the area is home to Mammoth Cave National Park, the longest running cave system in the world.

6. National Tennessee Day: October 26 is the day to celebrate the 16th state in the union which makes October a good month to visit our Tennessee campgrounds. Thousand Trails Cherokee Landing, which is about an hour from Memphis is one option that also has nearby hiking trails and the interesting Bird Dog Museum. Thousand Trails Natchez Trace is where to stay if you want to explore Nashville and the surrounding small towns that make this a great fall destination.

7. National Horror Movie Day: Hunker down at your favorite campground on October 23 and watch one of your favorites but here’s some lead-up you can engage in: visiting horror movie filming locations! Oregon’s Timberline Lodge served as exterior shots in The Shining (stay at Mt. Hood Village Resort); Psycho’s iconic Bates Motel can be found at Universal Studio Hollywood’s theme park (stay at Thousand Trails Soledad Canyon); and California’s Bodega Bay played a major role in Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds (stay at Thousand Trails Russian River)

8. South Beach Seafood Festival: Set for October 23-26, a stay at Encore Miami Everglades will have you in driving, and eating, distance of this great event that kicks off stone crab season.

9. Harvest on the Harbor: Book a stay at Thousand Trails Moody Beach and enjoy one of Maine’s biggest fall draws, Harvest on the Harbor, held in Portland, Maine. The event, which is scheduled for October 24-26, is one of the biggest, and most popular, food festivals in Maine.

10. Happy Birthday Mr. President: Recognize the birthday of our second president John Adams (October 30) with a visit to the Adams National Historical Park in Quincy, Massachusetts (stay at Thousand Trails Sturbridge.)
