This month we are following along in the footsteps of Lewis and Clark in the Pacific Northwest where their nearly two-year expedition across the newly acquired land known as the Louisiana Purchase ended near the mouth of the Columbia River in 1805. Here are some commemorative spots to visit when camping with us in the Pacific Northwest:
End of the Trail Statue:
Located in Seaside, Oregon, this bronze statue displays Meriwether Lewis, William Clark and Seaman, the dog, who was the only non-human to complete the trip. The placement of the statue, in downtown Seaside, marks the approximate spot where the journey ended. If you camp at Thousand Trails Seaside, your journey to see the statue will be significantly shorter than the Lewis and Clark teams!

Lewis and Clark National Historic Park (Fort Clatsop):
Located in Astoria, Washington, the best campground to stay at while visiting Fort Clatsop would be Thousand Trails Long Beach, which is less than 30 miles away. Fort Clatsop was the winter encampment for the Corps of Discovery, the US Army team that was commissioned to make the journey and were led by Lewis and Clark. Visitors will see a replica of the camp as well as learn about life on the encampment from the costumed rangers. For details, visit nps.gov/places/fort-clatsop-or.htm.
Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center:
Located in Ilwaco, Washington, and another attraction to see when camping at Thousand Trails Long Beach, this location offers more information about the expedition and details what life was like when they reached their destination. Historic reenactments as well as military, maritime and Native American history can be found here.

The Columbia Gorge Discovery Center & Museum:
Located about 70 miles from our Mt. Hood Village Campground in Oregon, this is definitely worth a day trip adventure if you want to learn not only about Lewis and Clark but also the history of the Oregon Trail and what the area was like during the Ice Age! Visitors can expect a variety of interpretive displays, educational films, outdoor walking trails, and panoramic views of the Columbia River.
