Presidents’ Day was originally a day that celebrated the birthday of our first president and founding father, George Washington, which is February 22. Through the years, it also became a day to celebrate Abraham Lincoln’s birthday which is February 12. Since 1968 it has been celebrated on the third Monday of February and now it is considered a day to recognize all our presidents. One way to celebrate our presidents this time of year is by visiting the places around the US that honor those presidents – whether they be birthplaces, homesteads or presidential libraries. We took a spin around the country and have elected these as some of the best to see when camping nearby:
Located in Vancouver, Washington, Fort Vancouver offers visitors a deeper look into early U.S. expansion in the Pacific Northwest during a time shaped by influential presidents such as Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. Originally established as a fur trading post, the site later became a key U.S. Army outpost, reflecting the growing federal presence in the region. Campers staying at Thousand Trails Chehalis can easily make a day trip to explore reconstructed buildings, living history demonstrations, and exhibits that highlight how presidential leadership helped guide westward growth and settlement.

The Hermitage, where Andrew Jackson lived before, during, and after his presidency became his official home in 1804, when the land had only a log cabin on it. By 1924, the mansion on the property was completed and Jackson moved in with his wife, who passed before Jackson became president and is buried on the property. Visitors today can tour the mansion and the grounds. If you’re planning a camping trip at Thousand Trails Natchez Trace, the Hermitage can be a day excursion.

Situated in the heart of Texas Hill Country in Stonewall, the Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park preserves the legacy of Lyndon B. Johnson, one of the most influential presidents in shaping modern America. The site includes LBJ’s Texas White House, expansive ranch lands, and his boyhood home, offering insight into both his personal life and presidential career. Campers at Thousand Trails Medina Lake or Thousand Trails Lake Conroe will find this a worthwhile excursion, especially those interested in presidential leadership, civil rights history, and how Johnson’s Texas roots influenced his time in office.

Other sites of note near our campgrounds include Truman’s Little White House in Key West Florida (camp at Fiesta Key or Sunshine Key) and Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s Little White House in Warm Spring Georgia (camp at Pine Mountain RV Resort). Both of these served as retreats for rest and relaxation for these great men and their families.
