At over 260,000 square miles, Texas is one big state! This also means there’s a lot of space to camp and enjoy this big, beautiful state. If you are looking to camp big in Texas, consider one of our 20 campgrounds.
If fishing is your thing, then our Texas campgrounds are perfect. Thousand Trails Lake Conroe, situated on the same-named 22,000-acre lake famous world–wide for the fabulous bass fishing is also a good place for kayaking and peddle boating. Another great lake for bass fishing is Thousand Trails Lake Texoma – again with our campground of the same name situated adjacent. Lake Texoma is considered the Striped Bass Capital of the World so camp, fish, and relax! The crystal-clear lake at Thousand Trails Lake Whitney is perfect for fishing, boating and swimming, while Thousand Trails Lake Tawakoni is great for crappie, catfish and striped bass fishing.
Looking for proximity to the big cities of the Lone Star State? Consider Thousand Trails Bay Landing to check out all the things to do in the Dallas-Fort Worth area; Thousand Trails Medina Lake to be a short drive from San Antonio with its scenic River Walk, Thousand Trails Colorado River if you want to experience the Austin scene and Thousand Trails Lake Conroe/Houston North KOA Holiday is a great homebase for checking out the must-dos in Houston.

The proximity of these camping locations to South Padre Island beaches and attractions as well as the World Birding Center make them ideal for outdoor adventure in the winter months.
With plenty of places to stop along the way as you explore the Great State of Texas, we’ve gotta ask, “what are your plans once you’re here?” Aside from spending time at camp, which offer plenty of amenities from pools and spas to sports courts and clubhouses abuzz with activities, what would a Texas Bucket List include? Here are a few ideas:
Austin
Tour the Texas State Capitol; check out the Austin bat colony (yes, real bats – details can be found at austinbats.org); experience the music scene; or take to the water and enjoy paddleboarding on Lake Lady Bird, which is located right in the heart of the city. Two major annual events in Austin are South by Southwest in March and Austin City Limits Music Festival in October.
Dallas-Fort Worth
Visit the Dallas Zoo, the Dallas Aquarium, the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden, the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth and the Fort Worth Stockyards National Historic District, to name a few. The State Fair of Texas is held every year in Dallas and if you’re interested in attending in 2026, check out bigtex.com for details.
Houston
Stops can include Space Center Houston; the Houston Museum of Natural Science and the Cockerell Butterfly Center; and a visit to Hermann Park, a 445-acre public park that has walking trails, several gardens and is home to the Houston Zoo, among other attractions. The Bayou City Arts Festival, which has been running twice annually since 1972, is a must-do for art lovers but also note they have food trucks, live music and art competitions.
San Antonio
There is the scenic River Walk, plus the Alamo, the San Antonio Missions National Historic Park; Natural Bridge Caverns; the trendy Pearl District and Market Square, the large, historic Mexican marketplace with over 100 shops and stalls. Plan to spend the holiday season here to enjoy the River Walk when 200,000 multi-colored twinkling lights are installed to set the mood for a very, merry holiday.
