Yes, we know summer doesn’t end after the 4th of July, nor should Halloween decorations be put up in August so to that end we are highlighting summer retreats for a September camping getaway.
Southern California is one place to find endless stretches of beach and abundant sunshine, and according to theplanetd.com, San Diego serves up the perfect endless summer vibe in September. There are festivals including Restaurant Week, running from September 14-21 with more than 100 restaurants participating; Taste of Gaslamp 2025, a culinary tour of more than 20 of San Diego’s best restaurants in one of the city’s most lively neighborhoods, set for September 20; and the MCAS Miramar Air Show September 26-28. From a beach standpoint, consider La Jolla Cove, a beautiful little rocky cove with calm waters and frolicking sea lions; the classic and scenic Coronado Beach with its white sands; Mission Beach with its boardwalk or Sunset Cliffs which has the picturesque views. In Los Angeles, September brings the Rose Bowl Flea Market (September 14) while Dodger baseball is still going strong. For beaches consider Santa Monica State Beach with the pier, bike paths and walking paths, plus the classic Southern Cali beach vibes or Venice Beach to experience the street performers and artisans that can be found here. El Matador in Malibu is considered one of the most picturesque in the area. And one more beach that’s worthy of a September visit is Pismo Beach – the waters are warm, the air is cooler, with average temps around 70 degrees, and clams are prime. FYI, book your stay at Pacific Dunes Ranch Campground and then come back again in October to enjoy the 79th Annual Pismo Beach Clam Festival scheduled for October 18-19.

They don’t call it the Sunshine State for nothing – did you know Florida averages 240 days of sun annually with September days providing an average of 7-8 hours of sun? And with miles upon miles of shoreline beaches all around the Florida coast, spending sunny beach days in Florida this September is pretty easy. On the Gulf side, consider St. Pete’s Beach or Clearwater Beach (camp at Encore Vacation Village) and Fort Myers Beach (camp at Encore Fort Myers Beach) and on the east coast consider Cocoa Beach (camp at Encore Space Coast) or Ft. Lauderdale Beach (camp at Encore Sunshine Holiday). Of course the Orlando-based theme parks in September are much less crowded so they could provide several sun-packed days of fun (book a stay at Encore Tropical Palms). Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights have already begun, and the Epcot International Food and Wine Festival is underway as well. Florida has several excellent trail systems for biking so grab a map of the Florida Coast to Coast Trail and the Florida National Scenic Trail and see where you can connect while camping at any of more than 40 Florida campgrounds throughout the state.

Texas is a place where hot is a year-round state of mind so as September rolls in, Texans don’t quite get the concept of “sweater weather.” But that’s good news for anyone looking to soak up the rays after the crowds have gone home and the kids are back in school.
According to traveltriangle.com, reasons to visit Texas in September can include Oktoberfest Dallas set for September 27 (camp at Thousand Trails Bay Landing); the Medina Lake Cajun Festival scheduled for September 27 (camp at Thousand Trails Medina Lake) and the State Fair of Texas, held at Fair Park in Dallas, that runs September 30-October 23 (camp at Thousand Trails Bay Landing). Fisherpeople should note that September at Lake Conroe is excellent fishing for largemouth and striped bass as the bass become more active in cooler weather (camp at Thousand Trails Lake Conroe).
