8 August Celebrations to Pair with Your Camping Trip

While August may be considered the Dog Days of Summer, we found several special celebrations for the eighth month of the year while camping with us. Join us as we celebrate all month long!

The controversial condiment mustard is widely celebrated on August 2. Why not plan a camping trip this month to learn all about mustard at the National Mustard Museum in Middleton, Wisconsin? The museum features over 6,000 jars, bottles and tins from 50 states and 70 countries, plus other mustard memorabilia and fun facts. You can also purchase mustard and mustard novelties here. Visit mustardmuseum.com for details and book a stay at Blackhawk Campground or Lakeland Campground in Milton for this tasty trip.

National Farmers Market Week is also in August, and according to USA Today some of the best in the country include Washington State’s Maple Valley Farmers Market, open Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. (book a stay at Thousand Trails Thunderbird) and San Francisco’s Ferry Plaza Farmers Market, open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. (book a stay at San Francisco RV Resort).

The oyster is celebrated on August 5 with National Oyster Day. Even beyond this celebratory day, you can head to some oyster-focused locations near our campgrounds. Options that offer tours or tastings include Oyster and Watermen Tours in Urbanna, Virginia (stay at Bethpage Camp-Resort); Island Creek Oysters in Duxbury, Massachusetts (stay at Thousand Trails Gateway to Cape Cod); or Nauti Sisters Sea Farm in Yarmouth, Maine (stay at Pinehirst Campground).

Looking for a good read while relaxing campside? Celebrate Love your Bookshop Day (August 14) and see if you can’t find a real page-turner at some of the best bookshops in the country. If you can’t find something at Powells’ City of Books in Portland, Oregon you might have a real issue. Powell’s is the country’s largest independent bookstore with an amazing selection of new and used books (book a stay at Portland Fairview RV Park). Parnassus Books in Nashville, Tennessee is another independent bookseller noted for its wide selection, helpful staff and great layout (book a stay at Thousand Trails Natchez Trace).

Take a ride on a roller coaster to celebrate National Roller Coaster Day (August 14). Options could include one of the oldest – the Giant Dipper in San Diego’s Belmont Beach was built in 1925 (book a stay at Thousand Trails Pio Pico or Oceanside RV Resort) or one of the fastest – the Titan at Six Flags over Texas in Arlington operates at 85 mph (stay at Thousand Trails Lake Whitney or Thousand Trails Bay Landing).

Have you ever had a Cubano, the traditional Cuban sandwich featuring roasted pork, ham, swiss cheese, pickles and mustard on Cuban bread? If you love them or have yet to try them, take note that National Cuban Sandwich Day is August 23. According to tastingtable.com the best places to try them around the country include Porto’s Bakery in Los Angeles (stay at Thousand Trails Soledad); Buena Gente Cuban Bakery in Decatur, Georgia (stay at Pine Mountain); and Cafe La Trova in Miami (stay at Encore Miami Everglades).

A camping trip with your four-legged friend is in order for National Dog Day (August 26) and here are some of the best things to do when travelling with your furry fav – one of the best dog beaches according to Travel US News is Cannon Beach, Oregon (stay at Thousand Trails Seaside); dog-friendly national parks include Acadia National park in Maine (all of our Bar Harbor resorts are pet-friendly); and generally speaking, some of the most pet-friendly cities include Bend, Oregon (stay at Thousand Trails Bend-Sunriver) and Sedona, Arizona (stay at Thousand Trails Verde Valley) in terms of dog-friendly attractions, activities and dining options.

The month of August is filled to the rim with days celebrating wine –though we don’t need a reason to raise a glass—including National White Wine Day (August 4), International Pinot Noir Day (August 18) and International Cabernet Day (August 28). Why not visit some of the wine regions near our campgrounds like California’s Sonoma County (stay at Thousand Trails Russian River); Michigan’s Harbor Country (stay at Thousand Trails Bear Cave) or Virginia’s Chesapeake Bay Wine Trail (stay at Thousand Trails Harbor View).
