Hallmark holiday movies fan or not, you can’t deny there’s something about small towns that evoke a feeling of comfort, warmth and nostalgia. Get your holidays off to a charming start by visiting some of America’s best small towns.
Round Top, Texas was named by Travel + Leisure as the best small town for shopping thanks to its mix of vintage finds, boutiques and antiques. They even called the coffee and pie establishment “Hallmark-esque.” Interesting that it’s considered a shopping mecca of sorts when the town’s total population numbers about 100 – and no we didn’t miss a zero here! One big draw which sees thousands of people flock to Round Top is the week-long antiques show held three times per year in spring, fall and winter. Another nod from Travel + Leisure’s listing goes to Clemson, South Carolina notable as the Best Small College Town. Nicknamed “Tigertown” as an homage to the Clemson University Tigers, this tiny town is big on charm. The South Carolina Botanical Garden is located here as is Lake Hartwell State Park with nature trails for walking and the lake for fishing opportunities. Another interesting attraction here is the Bob Campbell Geology Museum, located on the Clemson University campus and home to over 10,000 minerals, fossils and rocks from around the world. The history, culture and of course the setting of Clemson, at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains, make this a small town worth the visit.

Named Best Small Town for Food & Wine, Elk, California is a delightfully charming coastal town with an equally charming beach – Greenwood State Beach. While the beach is great for treasure-hunting in the form of abalone shells, driftwood and sea urchins, more treasures can be found at the Artists’ Collective featuring unique art by local artists. Where does Elk get its food and wine praise? From a food standpoint, it is the Harbor House Inn, a Michelin starred eatery, and as for wine, it’s definitely the proximity to the many wineries found in the nearby Anderson Valley.
