4 Great Trips for April

4 Great Trips for April

The Wandering Wheatleys, a world-traveling couple who author the blog, wanderingwheatleys.com, recently posted about the best places to travel in April. Some of the places they highlighted are near the places we consider “the best places to camp in April,” so let’s take a look:

Bodega Bay, California: Book a stay at Thousand Trails Russian River and explore this lovely coastal California area. First off, the tiny town of Bodega may look familiar as it was used in the filming of the Alfred Hitchcock thriller, The Birds. Check out the Potter Schoolhouse and St. Theresa of Avila church to stir memories of the scary bird-oriented thriller. Speaking of birds, the Bird Walk Coastal Access Trail is a great way to get in some outdoor activity while catching some of the birds of the area on the 1.19 miles of trails here. If you wanna look for something bigger, don’t miss whale watching at Bodega Head where it’s prime time for spotting Orca and Grey whales through May.

Skagit Valley, Washington: The reason to visit Skagit Valley in April is the tulips! Over 300 acres of tulips, spread across various farms, are in bloom and the annual Skagit Valley Tulip Festival runs the whole month of April. Plan to make Thousand Trails La Conner your home base as you explore the tulips and all the other festival events (tulipfestival.org). If you want more than tulips, consider the Skagit County Historical Museum or the Museum of Northwest Art. Pioneer Park or Kukutali Preserve State Park Heritage Site are great options if you’re hitting the trails.

Pinnacles National Park: According to wanderingwheatleys.com, this is a great park to visit in April thanks to the weather and the wildflowers. Pinnacles, which is one of the smallest national parks in the US, is great for birding and you just might catch a glimpse of a condor as the Park is part of the California Condor Recovery Program. Other fun things to do here include exploring Bear Gulch Cave and Balconies Cave (home to bat colonies), getting some great pics of the Park’s iconic rock formations, which are the remains of an ancient volcano, and enjoying the wildflower blooms on the High Peaks Loop or Juniper Canyon trails. Marina Dunes RV Resort is the best spot for camping to be near Pinnacles National Park.

Williamsburg, Virginia: The great thing about visiting Colonial Williamsburg in April is that the crowds are smaller as summertime is this living history museum’s busiest time. Another plus, according to the Wheatleys, is that Busch Gardens Williamsburg, the nearby 422-acre amusement park, is less crowded in April too! Make camp at Thousand Trails Williamsburg and explore the Historic Triangle which includes Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown and Yorktown. The Williamsburg Farmers Market runs every Saturday and the Island Drive Loop, part of the Historical Jamestown Bike Trail, is a great way to see the area.
