Spring is right around the corner and that means camping season, like the spring flowers, will soon be in full bloom. Here are a few places to consider for a great spring camping trip.
Mammoth Cave (KY): Named one of the best places to visit in spring by familytravelfever.com, Mammoth Cave National Park, which is the longest cave system in the world, comes out of its winter hibernation offering more tours and plenty of spring wildflowers in bloom. The Kentucky weather is warming up with daytime temps between 60 and 70 degrees which is great for hiking and biking in the area. Of course, the caves are open for tours, but there’s also an above-ground tour, Beneath Your Feet, on the Park’s walking trails. Enchanted Rock State Park (TX): Tripsavvy.com highlights Enchanted Rock State Park as a great spring visit. Not only are the Texas Hill Country bluebonnets in bloom, along with all the other spring wildflowers, but the spring weather is much more enjoyable than the heat of a Texas summer. Make Thousand Trails Medina Lake your camping home base while you visit Enchanted Rock State Park and explore the giant pink dome and the hiking trails found here.
If you’re looking for spring festivals, there are several to plan for. McMenamins UFO Festival in McMinnville, Oregon (near Thousand Trails Pacific City) is set for May 19-20 this year and promises plenty of out-of-this-world fun. If camping in California’s wine country is on the spring agenda, consider a stay at Thousand Trails Russian River and plan to take in a few festivals in April that include the alternative to all that wine at the Battle of the Brews event on April 1 or the Bodega Bay Fisherman’s Festival (set for April 22-23) for a seafood extravaganza with live music and arts and crafts vendors.There’s also the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival in Washington State where Thousand Trails La Conner makes for a great camping location while wandering along the tulip fields. The festival runs throughout April. Come April and May, the spring break crowd has come and gone and there are less crowds to enjoy all the Sunshine State has to offer. With over 40 campgrounds to choose from, you can spend all spring checking out the Florida attractions. Florida highlights include the Space Coast with plenty of beaches and Kennedy Space Center; Miami, with its diverse neighborhoods including Little Havana, is a great choice in spring thanks to mild weather; and Orlando while the theme parks are less crowded as school is back and session and summer break is a few months off. Similarly, The Keys are less crowded with another spring break season come and gone so snorkeling, kayaking, and visiting the area’s attractions like Bahia Honda State Park, John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, and all that Key West has to offer is a great spring camping trip option.
