5 Ideas for a Mom-Themed Camping Trip

Most Moms are typically not the type to give you a detailed agenda of how she wants to spend the one day of the year where it’s all about her. Or, maybe she does like to plan the day leaving nothing to chance. Whichever category your favorite Mom falls into, make sure her day is filled with things she loves!

Activities with her “squad”: Plan events where everyone can get in on the fun. Hiking is a great activity for all ages and abilities. Beautiful, and easy, hikes can be found in Yosemite National Park (Glacier Point); Twin Falls in North Bend, Washington; or the Bobcat Boardwalk in the Florida Everglades. Did your mom ever tell you to “go fly a kite” when you were getting underfoot? Well, spring is a great time to fly that kite and some great kite-flying locations include New Jersey’s  beaches of Wildwood, Washington’s Long Beach Peninsula, and Edgewater State Park in Cleveland.

Portland Japanese Garden

Flowers: If she loves flowers, make sure your camping location is near to some of the best flower displays around the country in May. According to curbed.com, some of the best botanic gardens include the Portland Japanese Garden, Virginia’s Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, and the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden. If it’s fields of flowers she deserves, consider a trip to California’s Carlsbad Ranch, which is in bloom through mid-May with more than 50 acres of ranunculus; Purple Haze Lavender Farm in Washington with its fragrant fields of this purple herb; or Crested Butte, Colorado, aka the Wildflower Capital of Colorado, where there is no shortage of wildflower blooms.

Little Havana

Sweets and Savories: You definitely want to make sure none of the foods enjoyed when celebrating Mother’s Day involve any prep or clean-up on Mom’s end. Why not take in some of the best foodie tours in the country. Miami has the Little Havana Food and Walking Tour while Seattle campers can enjoy the Food and Cultural Walking Tour of Pike Place Market. Enjoy a little bit of everything on Los Angeles’ Melting Pot Food tour. Or, go gourmet with a Gourmet Food and Wine Tour in Napa Valley. Of course, a camping trip to Hershey requires a Chocolate Tour and if you’re camping with us in Pennsylvania Dutch Country, make sure to check out the Turkey Hill Experience, where it’s all about the ice cream (turkeyhillexperience.com)!

The Arts: Does she love art and architecture? Here are a few ideas to satisfy her cultural side. If Mom loves nothing more than a tour of historic buildings, consider a camping stay in Santa Barbara or Miami and enjoy the walking architectural tours available. Or, try a Wisconsin camp adventure with a side trip to Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin outside Madison. How about taking in some famous art dedicated to motherhood? There’s Mother and Child by John Henry Twatchan at the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco, or Mary Cassatt’s The Child’s Bath, which hangs at the Art Institute of Chicago, or Claude Monet’s beautiful painting of his wife and child at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston.

Peace and Quiet: Glamping might be the way to go if you’re seeking serenity. Consider the glamping tent at Marina Dunes or a cabin, cottage, or tiny house in the center of all things tranquil at Sedona’s Verde Valley. Or, if listening to the soothing sounds of water – whether ocean, river, or lake – does the trick, try camping at California’s Ponderosa, North Carolina’s Forest Lake, or Wisconsin’s Neshonoc. For ocean air, consider Florida’s Sunshine Key or any of the Bar Harbor resorts.
