Great Ways to celebrate all things February

For some people, February is a tough month to get through. January starts the year with resolutions and efforts to make changes and March heralds the arrival of spring, warmer weather, and spring break trips. So, what’s so great about February? A lot!

February brings us Black History Month, the Chinese New Year (btw, 2022 is the year of the Tiger), American Heart Month and speaking of hearts, good old Valentine’s Day. We can find plenty to do related to these events.

Celebrate Chinese New Year by visiting some of the most famous Chinatowns in the U.S. Houston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Seattle all make the list when it comes to the top Chinatowns in the US. In Seattle, the area is now known as the International District and is home to the only Pan-Asian museum in the country. Visit the Wing Luke Museum (wingluke.org), a Smithsonian affiliate, to learn about the culture and history of Asian Pacific Americans. San Francisco’s Chinatown is considered one of the oldest and largest in the U.S. and the Chinatown in Los Angeles welcomes visitors through its iconic Dragon Gate.

Visiting sites around the U.S. significant to Black history in our country is a great way to recognize and honor Black History Month. Those sites could include the National Civil Rights Museum (civilrightsmuseum.org) in Memphis which highlights five centuries of history through artifacts, exhibits, and films or the California African American Museum in Los Angeles (caamuseum.org). CAAM focuses on African American art, history, and culture with a focus on California and the West. To reflect on musical contributions, plan a trip to the National Museum of African American Music, located in Nashville. This is the only museum that focuses on the many music genres influenced or created by African Americans.

February is also designated as American Heart Month and the purpose of this designation is to raise awareness about heart health and urge Americans to reduce risk factors for heart diseases. There are several ways to do that, and they include participating in physical activities that are good for the heart. Another is following a heart healthy diet, which includes plenty of fish. Here’s an idea – head to any one of our campgrounds and walk or hike the nearby trails for some heart-healthy exercise. For some good fish, why not try catching your own dinner? Plan a fishing trip to Texas or Florida and plan to camp with us nearby your fishing expedition.

Or, celebrate Valentine’s Day in some of the most romantic spots in the U.S. – a California wine country trip (stay with us at Russian River RV Campground) is always good for romance. Renew your vows or take the plunge at a Las Vegas wedding chapel (stay with us at Las Vegas RV Resort), or pop the question with a beautiful sunset as your backdrop (beachy options can include San Diego, Santa Barbara, or Oregon’s iconic Cannon Beach. Check out rvonthego.com for camping locations near these spots.)
