Historic downtown Charleston in South Carolina
By no means does winter mean no more outdoor fun! In fact, in many places, it means just the opposite as some towns thrive on snowy weather to maintain their popularity, but the cooler weather means less crowds and more fun for you!
For Ski Bums: Avid skier or just learning? If there’s any elevation, you can bet someone is skiing. On the west coast, consider towns like Bend, Oregon, which receives more than 400 inches of snow annually on nearby Mt. Bachelor. Book a stay at Bend-Sunriver RV Campground and you’re just 20 minutes from the mountain. Washington’s Mt. Baker gets about 200 inches of snow per year and is another great Pacific Northwest spot for skiing for all levels – as the locals say, “If you learn to ski at Mt. Baker, you can ski anywhere!” Grandy Creek RV Campground is a great spot to stay while tackling Mt. Baker. Head south on the coast to California and there are plenty of choice skiing opportunities like Yosemite’s Badger Pass Ski Area, or the Heavenly Mountain Ski Resort in South Lake Tahoe. The perfect home base for these ski spots include Yosemite Lakes and Tahoe Valley Resort, respectively.
For Winter Hikes: If you check out outsideonline.com’s list of Ten Perfect Winter Hikes, several trails are conveniently located near our campgrounds. Chehalis RV Campground is less than 70 miles from Washington’s Olympic National Forest; Miami Everglades RV Resort is a little over an hour’s drive to Big Cypress National Preserve on Florida’s Gulf Coast; and Tall Chief RV Campground in Fall City, Washington, is about 90 miles from Mazama Ridge, located in Mt. Rainier National Park. These all made the list and the draw for all is the scenery, and the proximity to our campgrounds, of course.
Just for Fun: Charleston, South Carolina, holds plenty of southern charm come winter. For starters, the weather is a pleasant 50-60 degrees and again, less tourists means you can enjoy the town without dodging crowds. The Oaks at Point South in Yemassee is about 60 miles from this historic charmer. Another charmer, thanks to the weather that hovers between 50 and 70 degrees all winter, is Los Angeles. The skies seem bluer when you know you’re escaping snow-covered landscapes! With such fabulous weather, outdoor activities can include hikes, bike rides, and of course, plenty of beach time. Soledad Canyon RV Campground is a great LA-base for this trip.
