The Pacific Northwest Coast is one of the best places to “go fly a kite,” as they say, thanks to its wide open spaces and continuous strong winds off the Pacific. To that end, the Oregon Coast plays host to some of the most popular kite fests in the country. Two big kite events are scheduled for this summer and they include the Lincoln City Summer Kite Festival, set for June 22-23, and the Rockaway Beach Kite Festival in August (date to be determined.)
The Lincoln City Summer Kite Festival is held on the beach at the D River Recreation Site and includes such events as kite making workshops, a kite parade, as well as kite flying. It is family fun for everyone and guaranteed to make you a kiting enthusiast, if you weren’t one already. If you miss the summer event, mark your calendar for October 5-6, when it happens all over again. Check out www.oregoncoast.org for more details.
Although the date is yet to be confirmed, the Rockaway Beach Kite and Art Festival is heading into its 42nd year this August. Sponsored by the American Kitefliers Association, this event brings together professionals and amateurs alike to create the largest organized group of kitefliers in the world. This festival adds more fun to the mix with live music, food, and arts and craft vendors.
(Pacific City RV Campground is approximately 22 miles from Lincoln City and 36 miles to Rockaway Beach)
If you’re exploring the Pacific Northwest coast this summer, head further north to attend the Washington State International Kite Festival. Held each year in Long Beach, Washington, this year’s event is scheduled for August 19-25. This is a week-long kiting extravaganza drawing both fliers and spectators alike from around the world. Long Beach is also home to the World Kite Museum, which explores the history and popularity of kite flying through exhibits and artifacts. For information on the museum as well as the Kite Festival, visit www.kitefestival.com. Conveniently, Long Beach RV Campground is a perfect place to stay while attending the festival and learning all about kites.
