Autumn in Oregon is often referred to as “the second summer.” The weather can be warmer than in previous “summer” months and the water temperature of the ocean is also at its warmest. Scores of tourists and locals hitting the beach will have all gone back to their regular schedules so the beaches and beach towns are quieter but still just as welcoming.
So, plan a road trip down the Oregon coast and enjoy a “second summer” vacation. The Thousand Trails Oregon Coast campgrounds include Pacific City RV Campground, Seaside RV Campground, South Jetty RV Campground, and Whaler’s Rest RV Campground.
Here are a few don’t-miss things to see and do:
- See Covered Bridges
Oregon has 54 covered bridges and several of them can be found along or near the coast. There are plenty of ways to see these quaint pieces of history, including a covered bridges scenic bikeway and several guided tours. Go to traveloregon.com/things-to-do/culture-history/covered-bridges for more information, and for a list of covered bridges check out coveredbridgemap.com.
- Fall Foliage Tours
Take a drive on Oregon’s scenic byways to catch the fall color show that runs along the coast and inland. Visit oregonfallfoliage.wordpress.com for some ideas as to where and when to find the best color displays.
- Go Crabbing
All along the Oregon coast are plenty of opportunities to “go crabbing” either on your own or with a tour group. Fall is typically the best time for crabbing in Oregon. Some prime crabbing spots include Nehalem Bay, Tillamook, Siletz Bay, and Nestucca Bay. In Nehalem Bay, be sure to check out Kelly’s Brighton Marina. Also, check out tillamookcoast.com for crabbing info in the area. The state’s Fishing and Wildlife Department also offer crabbing information and locations at dfw.state.or.us.
- Get Artsy
Cannon Beach is considered one of the best art towns in America, and The Stormy Weather Arts Festival could well be one of the reasons. Now celebrating its 31st year, this event is held the first weekend of November and focuses on visual and performing arts, bringing together artists, musicians, writers, and more. Visitors can wander through the galleries, enjoy live music, check out clothing trends in a fashion show, and sample local craft beers. The event runs from November 2 through November 4, 2018.
