What defines a road trip? Does it have to be a certain number of miles to make it a road trip or can it be a quick trip on a scenic byway that may provide more things to see than a multi-state drive on an interstate? We say define it anyway you want to, but make sure you take a road trip or two in 2022. Here are five to consider that all offer a little something different.

Iconic: If you look up best road trips in the USA, the list will most likely include the Pacific Coast Highway somewhere in the Top 5. Consider a trip that starts north in San Francisco and ends on the southern Cali coast in San Diego. Highlights and stops all the way can include Monterey, Big Sur, Santa Barbara, and Los Angeles. Camping options can include San Francisco RV, Marina Dunes, Rancho Oso, Soledad Canyon, and Pio Pico.

Scenic: One of the most beautiful road trips to be found in the U.S. is the Blue Ridge Parkway that runs through 29 counties in Virginia and North Carolina. Must-sees on this ride include Mabry Mill, Natural Bridge, the Blue Ridge Music Center, and Blowing Rock. Options for camp stops can include North Carolina’s Green Mountain and Virginia’s Lynchburg.

Food Drive: Check out Maine’s Lobster Trail – a road trip that has a specific purpose…to eat lobster! From Portland heading north there are several locations that are highlighted along the 125-mile route. From lobster rolls to whole Maine lobster, there’s a lot to sample and a lot to see. Book a stay at Moody Beach and then make your way up the Lobster Trail with a stop at any of our Bar Harbor resorts.

Historic: How about a road trip that includes lighthouses. If you drive Oregon’s Highway 101 from north to south, you can see nine historic lighthouses. Beginning with the Cape Meares Lighthouse just outside Tillamook, you can wind your way down the coast all the way to Port Orford where you can see the Cape Blanco Lighthouse. Visit traveloregon.com for a listing of the lighthouse and their locations. Also check out thousandtrails.com to pinpoint our Oregon coast resorts that are perfect for stops along the way.

Quirky: A great way to see the eastern part of Texas is to travel the Kolache Trail. Starting north near Dallas, the trail highlights bakeries along the way that honor the area’s Czechoslovakian heritage and serve up some of the most delicious fruit or cheese-filled baked goods you’ll ever find this side of Atlantic! For a google map of the trail, go to onlyinyourstate.com/texas/kolache-trail-tx. Book a stay at Bay Landing, just outside of Dallas and then head south, eating your way along the way, to a possible final destination at Lake Conroe.
